Wind power

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. The mechanical power is converted into electricity by a generator.

Utility-Scale Wind Power Station

Large wind turbines are mostly installed in big groups to generate clean energy for the grid. They are very efficient wind turbines that operate with extraordinarily high availability rates and generate cost-competitive electricity at power plant scales. The large turbines have rotors measuring about 100 meters in diameter and are installed on tall towers.

Wind power plants are most cost-effective in regions with consistent strong winds; however, these areas are not necessarily near large cities. Consequently, power grid lines must transmit the electricity to the end users. Wind is an irregular and varying power source, so power storage such as battery may be required.

A combination of wind and solar power generation plant can be very efficient in suitable sites.

Advantages of Wind Power

Wind power is very cost-effective!

  1. Utility-scale wind farm is one of the lowest-cost energy sources available today, depending on the wind resource and the particular project’s location. It requires no fuel consumption and powered by wind only.
  2. Wind farms creates quality jobs. The U.S. wind sector employed more than 100,000 workers in 2016.
  3. Wind power facilitates industrial growth and competitive economy.
  4. It's a clean power source. Wind energy doesn't pollute the air like thermal power plants that rely on combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, which emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide—causing human health difficulties and economic harms. Wind turbines don't produce atmospheric emissions that cause acid rain, smog, or greenhouse gases.
  5. The wind supply is abundant and limitless.
  6. It's sustainable energy!
